Trauma and mouth guards

Mouth guards are recommended for children, adolescents and adults involved in any contact sports.  If the child is under twelve years of age, the most cost effective mouth guard is a "boil and bite" mouth guard from a store such as Wal-Mart, Target or Walgreens.  Teeth in children under twelve are changing so frequently, they may go through multiple mouth guards, and rather than investing in a custom mouth guard (that a dentist makes), a "boil and bite" is less of an investment.

Once all the permanent teeth are in, and the dentition stabilizes, a custom mouth guard is a good long-term investment for adolescents and adults.
