GUM DISEASE (PERIODONTAL DISEASE)

Treatment of gum disease

Gum disease requires a more thorough cleaning, known as scaling and root planing.  Rather than just cleaning the top of the tooth, the dentist or hygienist, will also clean below the gums along the root surface and remove any build-up (also known as tartar).  Because the cleaning occurs under the gums, the dentist will get the patient numb, so it isn’t uncomfortable.  This cleaning usually occurs in two visits rather than one.

After the thorough cleaning is complete, the dentist will evaluate the success of this treatment.  If the bone and gums respond well, the patient can go back to having routine cleanings above the gums, but they will likely be more frequent than every six months.
