GUM DISEASE (PERIODONTAL DISEASE)
What is gum disease?
Gum disease, also known as periodontal disease, is a serious condition of the supporting structures of the teeth (particularly the jaw bones and gums). Many of us suffer from gingivitis (bleeding gums upon brushing and flossing) from time to time, and gum disease is worse than gingivitis. Gum disease can be inherited, but other health conditions such as tobacco use, diabetes and poor oral hygiene cause it to worsen.
Gum disease is a serious condition because it can also affect overall health. Diabetics with gum disease may have an inadequate response to insulin and other medications, causing their blood sugar to stay high and it is a struggle to find a medication that works. Gum disease has been linked to heart disease; plaque from the mouth can travel in the blood stream and contribute to clogged arteries; it can also cause infection elsewhere in the body. Gum disease may also play a role in pre-term low birth weight babies.
