DENTURES
Homecare
Taking dentures out for several hours a day is highly recommended. Tissues in the mouth need to "breathe" just like a wound under a Band-Aid, and if dentures are not being removed often enough, or kept clean, patients will develop a fungal infection like thrush. Soaking dentures in denture tablets or mouth rinse and keeping them moist is recommended when not wearing them. Unfortunately, denture tablets only prevent dentures from accumulating some tartar and odor, they do not prevent stain and they do not disinfect. In order to appropriately disinfect dentures, they should be placed in a mixture of 1 tablespoon of bleach in an 8 oz. glass of water for approximately 15 minutes once a week—this is especially important to do following a cold.
