DENTAL CROWNS (CAPS)

Their use

Crowns (also commonly known as caps) are placed on teeth for a variety of reasons.  The main use of crowns is for protection of teeth and to prevent them from breaking in the future.  A dentist may recommend a crown if a patient has a large filling in a tooth (making it susceptible to breaking), a crack in a tooth, or if the tooth has had a root canal.

Getting a crown typically takes two appointments.  At the first visit, the dentist will trim the tooth down to make a mini tooth, which makes room for the crown material.  That day the patient will leave with a temporary crown to eat on and smile with.  At the second visit, the patient gets the actual crown.
