INFANTS' AND CHILDREN'S DENTISTRY

Trauma

Tooth trauma in children is a very common occurrence, especially when toddlers first begin to walk and when kids partake in sporting events.  The most important thing to do when a child suffers a serious mouth injury is to call the dentist.  Dentists are able to treat broken or chipped teeth, and lip injuries, but it is important the treatment occurs immediately following the injury.

If a baby tooth is knocked out, do NOT try to implant it, as the permanent tooth below could be injured.  If a permanent tooth is knocked out, be sure to handle the top of the tooth and NOT the root.  It is best to keep the tooth in the child’s mouth (if they are old enough not to swallow it), as the saliva will keep the tooth vital.  Other solutions used to transport a tooth to the dentist’s office are: Hank’s Save-A-Tooth® solution, saline, milk or Gatorade®.
