INFANTS' AND CHILDREN'S DENTISTRY

Fluoride use

Patients who live in fluoridated communities should make a conscientious effort to consume as much tap water as possible, including drinking tap water and cooking with it.  Patients living outside of a fluoridated community, or who have reverse osmosis, distilled water or well water, may want to consider additional fluoride supplementation.  Options the dentist may consider include:  fluoride tablets, mouth rinses, gels/varnishes and prescription toothpastes.  Another option is placing sealants (a filling material that seals the grooves and pits in teeth) to prevent future decay.
