How diet affects oral health

Many people are unaware that diet plays an important role in oral health.  For example, a diet deficient in key nutrients may delay healing time following certain procedures.  A healthy immune system not only improves overall health, but promotes rapid healing and a healthy mouth.

Amount of sugar, carbohydrate and acid intake also plays a key role in maintaining a healthy mouth.  Diets high in sugar, carbohydrates and/or acids promote the formation of cavities.  It is important that foods and beverages high in sugar and acid are limited or are consumed in a specific manner (such as with a meal or through a straw, and not by sipping them throughout the day).
