« Oral DNA Testing

Medical science is amazing. You’ve probably heard about DNA research and developments on the news. Now, we can use Oral DNA tests in dentistry. Dr. Lawson is happy to offer three types of Oral DNA testing.

Two of the tests relate to periodontal disease. MyPerioPath® can determine a patient’s proclivity for severe periodontal disease, so we can take appropriate preventive measures. This test is ideal for patients who show signs of periodontal disease, as well as those who have the condition and are not responding positively to current treatment. It’s also advisable for patients with diabetes, cardiovascular disease, those undergoing surgery or chemotherapy, smokers, and women of childbearing age.

MyPerioID® is for patients who already have gum disease. It tells us which types of bacteria are found in a patient’s mouth, so we can implement an effective treatment plan. Patients who have a family history of periodontal disease, a compromised immune system, or do not respond well to periodontal therapy are good candidates for this test. In addition, the assessment is recommended for dental implant patients who previously lost teeth to periodontal disease.

Oral DNA’s third test is not for periodontal disease. Instead, it determines a person’s risk for HPV-related oral cancers. People who are sexually active, show signs of oral cancer, have risk factors for oral cancer, or present suspicious lesions in the mouth should undergo the OraRisk HPV® exam.
